In December 2012, 3 year old Ava was diagnosed with a very rare ganglioglioma in her brainstem. She underwent a 14 hour brain surgery just days before Christmas to remove some of the tumor. Due to the location of the tumor removing it all was impossible. Nine months after this surgery the tumor began to grow and the family was faced with 3 options - chemotherapy, radiation or another surgery. In January 2014 she began a 70 week chemotherapy protocol but during week 46 the family received extremely devastating news. The tumor has now spread throughout her brainstem and has moved further down the spine.
Treatment is limited and urgent. The family will be faced with some tough decisions in the coming days. Will she receive radiation at the Stollery in Edmonton or be put on a clinical trial drug at Toronto Sick Kids? The proton therapy in Florida is no longer an option for Ava as she is too much of a risk due to her respiratory issues. At this point the future is unknown and there are a lot of unanswered questions. The most likely outcome is that Ava's life on this Earth will likely not be long. They must treat every day they have with her as a gift.
This account has been set up so that both Mandy and Jason can spend as much time as possible with Ava this side of Heaven. The money will also provide a way to fit a lifetime of memories into whatever time she has left on Earth. No family should have to bury their child and no family should have to worry about financial burdens while dealing with someone like this.
